FASTRA II: a desktop PC with thirteen GPU, or 12 TFlops for 6000 euros

Last year, the project FASTRA University of Antwerp has assembled a desktop supercomputer, is compact and relatively low cost. He proved to be quite powerful, but his performance is not enough for the latest research, it was decided to develop even faster system. Thus was one of the most powerful supercomputers in the size of a desktop PC – FASTRA II. The compact system with a capacity of 12 teraflops cost the creators of six thousand euros.

FASTRA II will be used by the research group ASTRA, which is developing new computational methods for tomography. The supercomputer consists of six dual-chip accelerators NVIDIA GTX 295, as well as single-chip NVIDIA GTX 275. To provide nutrition so many powerful video cards are used just four power supply.

New supercomputer is still experiencing problems with the stability of work that may be caused by a conflict between the BIOS, drivers, video cards and used a modification of Linux. More details about the new product discussed in the next video.
